Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the best games to release in 2021 and whilst it enjoyed strong reviews, Square-Enix has suggested that sales of the game “undershot initial expectations”.

But thanks to strong word of mouth, several Bafta nominations, and the game’s recent arrival on services like Xbox Games Pass and PS Plus Extra, there’s arguably never been a better time to download and try out Eidos-Montréal’s latest outing. We’d certainly love to see the developer given another shot at a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel having now been purchased by the Embracer Group in 2022.

For now, we imagine you’re curious to know how Save Rollback works in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. No problem, we have a guide for that just below, so read on for everything you need to know.

What is Save Rollback?

Some players have encountered issues whilst playing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, sometimes encountering obstacles that can’t be resolved with a quick reload to the most recent Checkpoint. That’s why Eidos Montreal introduced the Save Rollback feature as part of the games patch released on 23 November 2021.

According to the devs, this will allow you to resume a playthrough from the start of the chapter of your choice “essentially resetting your Story, Perks, and Ability Progress to the state they were in at the start of that chapter”.

The team only advises using the ‘Save Rollback’ feature if you encounter an issue preventing you from progressing the story further.

The Chapters Menu, which is located in the Main Menu of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, allows players to replay any prior completed Chapter without saving or overwriting your progress. This will let you experience the dialog or content you may have missed.

By activating the Save Rollback feature, you’ll be able to perform a Save Game after selecting Replay Chapter. If you want to know how this works, simply follow the step-by-step instructions below.

How Do You Use Save Rollback in Guardians of the Galaxy?

From the game’s Main Menu, select the Chapters Option. Next pick the Chapter you wish to restart from.

Once you have exited the Loading Screen and returned to gameplay, you will be able to access the in-game Menu to unlock the Save Rollback feature.

Players will notice that both the Save Game and Load Game options will be grayed out and inaccessible. This is normal. In order to unlock them, simultaneously press the following buttons depending on your platform:

• PS4 or PS5: Press L1, L2, and Triangle Face Button
• Xbox: Press Left Button, Left Trigger, and Y Face Button
• Nintendo Switch: Press L, ZL, and X Face Button

After you’ve pressed these buttons correctly, you’ll be able to see the Save Game option become available.

Next you will be able to select a Save Slot to write your Save Game on. Eidos Montreal recommend choosing an Empty Slot or, if unavailable, one that isn’t your primary Save Game slot, indicated by a Green Checkmark in the Top Right Corner of the Save Game.

After having selected the Save Slot to write into, or the Save Game to write over, you will be loaded back into the Main Menu’s Chapter Select.

From there, simply back up to the Main Menu, then navigate to Load Game.

Your newly Saved Chapter Replay file is in the Chapter you saved from and is now set as your Default file – once again indicated by the Green Checkmark – and resetting the Story, Perks, and Ability Progress, but keeping your unlockable items and files in the Galactic Compendium.

After loading into this new Save File, you’ll notice that both the Save Game and Load Game options are now available by default. Progressing ahead to any Checkpoint in the Story will continue to Autosave over your new file.
