September 15 - Patch 2.5 Update and Season 2 Ladder confirmed

Blizzard has announced that Content changes have gone live for the PTR 2.5 testing period. You can read all changes to the PTR patch notes on the link.

The team has also added six new Unique Grand Charms that allow the player to break specific monster immunity types while the charm is in their inventory.

Blizzard also announced that the PTR will end on September 19 at 10:00 a.m. PDT with a view to starting the Season 2 Ladder on October 6!

September 9 - A quick PTR / 2.5 Update

A big update for you on this Friday, as Diablo Community Manager PezRadar (Adam Fletcher) has provided fans with a quick update on the state of the Diablo 2 Resurrected PTR and the forthcoming 2.5 update.

There’s a lot of information which we don’t want to get lost, so we’ve quoted the full announcement just below for anyone who wants to read all the nitty gritty details.

TLDR:
• Seasons were meant to last 4 months. Season 2 taking longer than expected due to trying to perfect Terror Zone feature
• 2.5 PTR may be extended to implement changes
• Season 2 to start a week or two after 2.5 hits
• More precise dates to arrive in the next week

Hey all – Apologies for the silence on the PTR front. But wanted to provide a few updates here.

The team was spending the last week going through the survey information and community reports from PTR. There may be another iteration of PTR as the team wants to implement some items based off of the feedback but that is still being determined. We are running up against some scheduling timelines and want to make sure we can get 2.5 out the door sooner rather than later and get Season 2 kicked off for ladder. Extending PTR to continue to test and iterate will of course hold those two dates back. We are going to see if we can fit something in the existing timeline for right now, but if we can’t we may use some of the buffer between Patch 2.5 hitting and Season 2 starting to ensure we can get some additional game time from players on some of the Terror Zone items.

Some top level items from the feedback:

  • Players were noticing some zones were kind of not great for Terror Zones so expect some to be moved out and some others be moved in.
  • Players found some of the TZ content to be easy but we also can determine what characters played on PTR who offered that specific feedback and we noticed a lot of this came from Hammerdin players. The team has some ideas on this and we will be sharing that soon. I expect it to create a bit of a shift in build/class opportunities for players.
  • We will have more info on unlock conditions for TZ and how long each zone will be terrorized as well. We appreciate those who offered their thoughts on this.
  • Lastly, I know there were a lot of voices wanting this in SP. I can say that it is being looked into but for now, I would expect this to be a Ladder S2 feature as we are able to make tweaks to online numbers on the fly while SP has diff values for XP and needs to be tuned differently. The desire is high, but we want to get this nailed down for ladder play first and will move into looking at it for offline afterwards.

Lastly, I wanted to clear up on the S2 timing as there is a bunch of confusion on this and honestly it is 100% understandable why there is confusion. Before S1 began, we had noted that we were aiming to have seasons last 4 months. We are obviously past that timeline and to be 100% honest, we kind of didn’t plan very well on our end for that date. Terror Zones was a cool feature we wanted to nail correctly as it teetered back and forth on the line of “Should we do this or not?” many times throughout development and with that it caused a little bit of a delay on the Season transition. I just wanted to state that and apologize for that murkiness around when that season transition would occur. We are looking at mitigating this issue for future seasons in D2R.

The current order of operation is that we will end PTR here soon and start submission for final builds on 2.5 and get out that to everyone on the live environment. Season 1 to Season 2 will happen fairly immediately. We expect S2 to start a week or two after 2.5 hits so we have a date that everyone is aligned on and knows about. S1 will literally end the second we transition to S2.

For example: Season 1 will go to 4:59:59pm Pacific Time and Season 2 will begin at 5:00:00pm Pacific Time.

As more dates become aligned here in the coming week, we will provide updates to give a better window on 2.5 and S2 for the community.

August 25 - PTR 2.5 is live today in Diablo II: Resurrected

SURPRISE! Looks like Blizzard has pulled a fast one on players by announcing the new PTR for Diablo II: Resurrected, which has started today!

As well as sharing a whole heap of changes being tested on the PTR ahead of what we assume will be the games next reset, Blizzard are also debuting ‘Terror Zones’, which are described as a new experimental feature.

Here’s a quick overview of what this new D2 feature actually is:

The journey to level 99 is a celebrated experience for players and quite the milestone if achieved—a rite of passage, even. We want to offer an alternative to repeatedly farming Baal, Diablo, or Nihlathak. We also want the journey to level 99 to be accessible to a larger population of players, full of variety, and most importantly, challenging—this is where Terror Zones come in. As we get into details, please note that players can choose to opt-out of Terror Zones if desired.

When playing a Terror Zone-enabled game, every hour, the armies of the Burning Hells will focus their demonic might on specific zones, terrorizing them. The monsters in these zones will be at least two levels higher than your current level or their original level, up to a maximum per difficulty. The experience received and the loot dropped by killing a terrorized monster will be based on this new level. In addition, terrorized monsters will also grant additional experience points.

August 22 - D2 Reset news sometime this week?

Diablo Community Manager PezRadar (Adam Fletcher) has provided fans a bit more info on the upcoming Diablo 2 Resurrected reset/next season.

More info towards the end of the week?

July 26 - D2 Reset Coming August-ish

Diablo Community Manager PezRadar (Adam Fletcher) has more or less confirmed that we’ll see a D2 Reset at some point in August, although it is as yet unconfirmed officially.

One fan asked the community manager directly “Any news on the next d2r ladder”, to which Fletcher replied “sometime mid to late August most likely”.

Whilst we’ll likely still have to wait for some official news from Blizzard directly, at least we have some certainty that a reset is just around the corner.

June 27 - New Patch - No New Season

Diablo 2: Resurrected has dropped its latest update for the game with Patch 2.4.3. Although there are no details on the new season, we’ll be consistent to include this news, so here’s an overview of what this new update does, straight from the horses mouth.

“We introduce a variety of new features and improvements set to elevate multiplayer lobbies for console and PC. Accompanying these new features are quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes. Partying up with like-minded demon slayers is a cornerstone of the Diablo experience. Because of this, we‘ve been closely monitoring your feedback around multiplayer lobbies, and the changes highlighted below are a direct result of this. Sanctuary wasn’t built in a day—while we have made great strides in refining various aspects of Diablo II: Resurrected, we are dedicated to enhancing your pursuit of the Dark Wanderer even further. As always, we want to make the flames of this beloved classic burn hotter and brighter than ever before and invite your feedback to help aid us in this communal effort.”

Want the official patch notes, well follow the link to read those in full.

June 17 - New PC Lobby Coming Soon

Diablo Community Manager PezRadar (Adam Fletcher) has informed players on the Blizzard forum’s that the team is working on an improved lobby on PC. The post reads:

The team has been working on a pretty significant update for the game that will improve the PC lobby experience while also incorporating a major overhaul of the lobby system on the console version of D2R. We expect this to be in the coming weeks. Once we have more details on the exact date, we will be sharing that here on our forums.

We imagine this could launch with the release of the game’s next major update. Will it be held back for Season 2? Time will tell.

What Is Ladder Ranked Play In Diablo 2 Resurrected?

Ladder play in Diablo 2 Resurrected is essentially a ranked competitive system that allows players to test themselves against other players. Normally this consists of putting your skills to the test with a fresh Ladder-specific character and a series of modes which present their own unique challenges.  Each mode will have their own leaderboard where players compete to strategically gain experience within a limited timeframe while having access to Ladder-specific content.

Leaderboard rankings will reset once the Ladder season ends and shift characters to non-ladder mode. This will give you the opportunity to store your hard-earned treasured loot and Ladder-specific items for future Ladder seasons.

What Are The different Ladders?

Like the original game, Diablo 2 Resurrected offers four different Ladder modes for players to experience, including:

Ladder Version Mode Description
Classic Ladder The normal version of Ladder play that encompasses playing with four acts.
Hardcore Classic Ladder The hardcore (only 1 life) version of Ladder play that encompasses playing with four acts.
Expansion Ladder The normal version of Ladder play that encompasses playing five acts, as it includes the “Lord of Destruction” expansion content.
Hardcore Expansion Ladder The hardcore (only 1 life) version of Ladder play that encompasses playing five acts, as it includes the “Lord of Destruction” expansion content.

Diablo 2 Resurrected Ladder Reset – 2022 Dates

Originally the Diablo 2 Ladder would last 6 months, but when Blizzard launched the Diablo 2 Resurrected ladder they released it with the following statement: “Revamped Ladder Seasons – Join the ranks of Diablo II: Resurrected players worldwide and enjoy the race to the top of the ladder. Rank up in a new, exclusive ladder system with more frequent restarts and earn your place among legends.”

It sounds like the game won’t be resetting the D2R Ladder every 6 months, but equally the dev team have not confirmed exactly how long the current Season 1 will last. What is worth noting is a comment from Design Lead Robert Gallerani back in December, who suggested that each season will be 4 months long.

“Three months is too quick,” Gallerani said when speaking on a community Livestream hosted by MrLlamaSC. “Six months is too long and five just feels off considering twelve months in a year.”

The team supposedly settled on four-month seasons citing that the community seems fine with this length, and also allows the team to release three unique seasons in a year, which we imagine keeps the game as fresh as possible without creating too much work.

Diablo 2 Resurrected Ladder – Season 1 Start/End Dates

Update 1 - September 2022: How wrong were we! Blizzard has explained that Season 2 taking longer than expected due to trying to perfect the new Terror Zone feature.

Following a series of delays, the Diablo 2 Resurrected ladder season 1 started on April 28, 2022. Assuming that the developers stick to their promise of a 4 month reset, we imagine Season 1 will end around August 25, 2022.

Diablo 2 Resurrected Ladder Reset – Season 2 Start Dates

Update 2 - September 23 - Ladder Season Two will begin on October 6. This will also be the first Ladder Season with Terror Zones! The Ladder Season 2 Start times can be seen below:

Ladder Season Two Starts Times:

North America October 6, 5:00 p.m. PDT
Europe October 6, 2:00 a.m. CEST
Asia October 6, 9:00 a.m. KST
Update 1 - September 16 - Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 2 Resurrected Season 2 Ladder Starts October 6.

For the time being it’s not clear how much time the game might need between seasons. If we assume that Diablo 2 Resurrected has a two-week PTR – like we see in Diablo 3 with the testing of every new season – then we would imagine that Season 2 will begin in early September 2022.

It’s worth stressing though, that this is purely hypothetical and it’s quite possible that the team working on the game changes the length of the season or requires more time to release the next season, as we saw with the original delays to the ladder originally.
