Destiny 2 Lightfall: Release Date, Leaks, Story Theories, and Subclass Updates

 August 23, 2022

Update - Destiny 2 Lightfall has been revealed. We'll be updating this page shortly. For now, check out the reveal trailer, just above.

Destiny 2 The Witch Queen was arguably the best expansion for the game to date, but it’s also meant the bar has been raised significantly for Bungie’s next expansion, which we already know is called ‘Lightfall’.

This next chapter in the light and dark saga is set to be a doozy. Sure we might have a number of seasons to go before it arrives, but if those seasons are anything like those which preceded The Witch Queen, they’re also likely to be full of mystery and incredible story exposition that sets the groundwork for what is to come.

For now, though, read on and we’ll explain everything we know so far about this next expansion, including a few theories of our won on where the story might be headed.

Destiny 2 Lightfall Release Date & Delay Explained

Update, August 23 - Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2: Lightfall will release on 28 February 2023

Originally Destiny 2: The Witch Queen expansion was intended to launch in 2021, but it was subsequently delayed until 2022. This will also have a knock on impact on the release date for Destiny 2: Lightfall.

In a blog post about the Witch Queen delay, Bungie had this to say:

“Last summer, we outlined our ambition for the next era in Destiny 2 by announcing the full arc, starting with Beyond Light, followed by the Witch Queen and Lightfall. As we began to scale production on the Witch Queen last year, we made the difficult but important decision to move its release to early 2022; we also realized we needed to add an additional unannounced chapter after Lightfall to fully complete our first saga of Destiny.”

The Lightfall expansion was originally slated to release in 2022, but given that it’s unlikely we’ll see two Destiny 2 expansions released within 9 months of each other, we would imagine Lightfall has been delayed into 2023.

So, in summary. The Destiny 2: Lightfall has a 2023 release date, but for the time being there is no specific launch time for the next expansion.

Destiny 2 Lightfall Trailer

Update, August 23 - Lightfall Trailer revealed, here's the description:

"Shattered glass glints in the starlight. Soldiers of the Shadow Legion battle with Guardians under the unmistakable shadows of the fleet overhead—the Witness and its newest disciple are here. Find strength in the Light, arm yourself with Darkness, and peer beyond the veil as you raise the stakes on an already unforgettable campaign. Legendary Mode returns. Travel to a destination unlike any you've explored in Destiny 2. Cross paths with bone-chilling Tormentors and valiant Cloud Striders, join the fight against the Shadow Legion, and prevent devastation in the technologically advanced secret city of Neomuna."

Destiny 2 Lightfall New Subclass – Strand

Destiny 2 Lightfall introduces a brand-new subclass element called Strand, which will let players “Tap into the invisible threads that bind reality, then grab hold and take control”.

Players will be able to harness the power of Strand in ways never seen in Destiny 2: from weaving powerful attacks to pulling off incredible new mobility options in the form of a grapple hook.

Here’s a bit more info, depending on your favourite class.

Warlocks – Architect:

Architechs effortlessly manipulate the weave using only their mind. From the backline, these telekinetic sorcerers can even twist Strand into senitent creatures to do their bidding.

Hunter – Threadrunner:

Masters of movement, speed, and grace. The city is a Threadrunner’s playground as they grasp threads and weave new ones to dart through the air, finding the fastest way between two points.

Titan – Tyrant:

Untamed and wild, Tyrants tear at Strand to manifest claws they use to sever their targets from the Weave. Leaping into harms way with wild abandon, the line no one crosses is drawn by a Tyrant.

How Does Destiny 2 The Witch Queen End?

Before going deeper and looking at various leaks, lore and story theories, it’s worth recapping the end of The Witch Queen. We’d suggest having a watch of the video below from YouTuber Timbo.  For those wanting a quick catch up, here it is.

*Spoilers for those who haven’t finished The Witch Queen*

  • Savathûn was revealed to have died in the outskirts of the Last City, shortly after escaping the Dreaming City following the exorcism ritual which took place in Season 15 (the season before the release of The Witch Queen). Savathûn was resurrected by the Traveler
  • The Guardian uncovers a memory of a young Sathona, before she became the Hive God Savathun. It’s revealed that The Traveler was prepared to help the proto-Hive just as it later did for The Fallen and Humanity. But Sathona was tricked by The Witness (Darkness) into freeing the Worm Gods who would enslave the Hive
  • Following her defeat, Savathun warns the Guardian with her dying breath that the Witness is coming
  • Savathûn’s Ghost, Immaru, manages to escape and the Traveler returns to Earth
  • The Witness is finally shown in front of numerous Pyramid ships – the Black Fleet – planning for a final assault on the Guardian’s Solar System.

Destiny 2 Lightfall Story Predictions

Update, August 23 - More has been revealed so we'll update these predictios shortly to reflect any of the new details.

We’re going to keep this sort of brief and to bullet points since, the story of Destiny is pretty fluid and can change from one week or season to the next. After all, who could have predicted what would happen in Witch Queen in when Season of the Hunt launched alongside Beyond Light. So here are a few things we think could happen.

  • The Black Fleet will arrive in the Solar System and Darkness shall consume the EDZ and Nessus.
  • A new subclass will be introduced (more on that just below) to fight back against the Darkness.
  • The Lubraeans will be introduced as a new race, albeit, perhaps only as various boss fight encounters. For those wondering, the boss at the end of the Vow of the Disciple raid (Rhulk, Disciple of the Witness) was a Lubreaean. Rhulk was also described as the first disciple.
  • The Guardians will ultimately lose as The Witness lays waste to The Last City. Guardians and the Vanguard will be scattered across system.
  • At their weakest point, Xivu Arath (the Hive God of War) will attack the remaining Guardians, seeking revenge for the death of fellow Hive Gods Oryx and Savathun.
  • Savathun will be resurrected by The Traveller, and show Xivu Arath the truth, prompting a colossal fightback in the next expansion.
  • In The Final Shape, the Guardians, Savathun’s Hive guardians, the Eliksni and Empress Caiatl band together to vanquish The Witness once and for all, prompting a new golden age for all races.

That’s everything you need to know about the Destiny 2: Lightfall expansion so far, but stay tuned for more news, updates, leaks and story theories as we approach the next expansion throughout 2022.
